Ask anyone who isn't a teacher what a teacher does and you will get a variety of answers: give tests, watch movies, teach from a pre made lesson plan, or even babysit. There aren't many people out there who get what we do. In fact, really the only people that get what we do are other teachers. If you're a teacher, think about your friends. I bet the majority of them are other teachers!
The question is why? Well if you really think about it, other people would never be able to handle us always talking about the standards, complaining about what so-and-so did today, or laughing about some dumb teacher meme that we saw on Twitter today. Only teachers get other teachers' humor. And that is why we need to stick together.
This job can be very stressful and overwhelming at times. There are even several moments where you might feel like you want to quit teaching all together. But even when you are at your lowest point, who are the people you can always turn to? Other teachers. This is why it is so critical to support your teams and your departments because if we didn't have each other, we would surely go insane.
Trust me, I understand that there are times when you can't stand your teammates or there have been people you worked with that you just couldn't tolerate but at the end of the day we are all we have. Despite our different teachings styles, our backgrounds, or our experience we need to be able to lean on one another to make our job bearable and to survive each year with a smile on our face.
So even if you have people you work with that you might want to punch, remember we are in this together. Not many people understand our stories or our daily lives so no matter what, we have to stay strong. And remember sometimes it is your circus and those are your monkeys!
