The time has come....school is back in session! Why does it seem like every year the summers get shorter and shorter? Could it be because they start putting the 'Back to School' displays up at stores the day after the last day of school? How is that fair? At least give us a week without seeing the pencils, paper, and folders!
Although school is back, for most people their school is only filled with adults right now. The little ankle biters won't be coming back for a week. Now is the time to copy, plan, laminate, and FREAK OUT!
Why are you freaking out?! Because you just walked into your classroom and remembered how you left it two months ago in June. You remember that day right? The last day of school for you....the first day in 9 months were you haven't had 35 students shouting your name at once. You had almost forgotten what silence sounded like. And as you meditated on how nice it was to be able to wear jeans and not have to correct grammar, you began to pack.
You packed up 9 months of memories, artwork, lesson plans, and folders. All the while counting down the minutes until you were free from tests and grading once again. In that moment it hits you, the quicker you pack, the quicker you relax. So you grab any box you can find and just start throwing stuff in. On second thought, forget boxes, you have a huge cabinet in the back that can hold everything from the past several years of teaching.
Fast forward two months and here you are standing in your room, with a fresh new year and a fresh start. That is until you open the back cabinet and see all the crap you threw in there as you "reflected" on the year.
You start to wonder why in the world you would do this to yourself and make a note to be more organized during the year. As you start to pull everything out and put it into filing cabinets, you find a note from a former student telling you how much you inspired them. Then you find another. Then you find the poster you got on your birthday with every students' signature and 'Happy Birthday' messages. You find student work samples and pictures they drew as well as the card they signed when you lost your grandmother.
It is at this moment that you realize something. That day in June when you were tired, you weren't tired because of the pressures of the job. You were tired because you of all the essays you read and didn't have to correct because they had shown so much growth, you were tired because you smiled so much at all the jokes and stories your students told, you were tired from all the hugs and high fives you gave because you were so proud of all your students, but most of all you were tired because you just spend an entire year loving 135 amazing students.
Walking into your classroom, you might be freaked out, but it's all for good reasons. In just a few short days you will see a new group of smiling faces who warm your heart. You will also see the familiar faces of the ones who can't stay away. And for the umpteenth year, when people ask you if you have any kids you can proudly say "Yes, I have 135 amazing kids who I am super proud of!" (Then you can laugh to yourself as that person walks away snickering and rolling their eyes!)
ENJOY THE YEAR AND SMILE!
